I created Rainbot at a bot workshop during the Electronic Literature Organization conference in 2016. A little experiment in n-gram formation, it mashes a transcript of Paul Vasquez’s 2010 YouTube video “Yosemitebear Mountain Giant Double Rainbow 1-8-10” with Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “The Fish.”
Both texts include ecstatic moments of existential crisis that hinge upon seeing all the colors of the rainbow, but Bishop’s text exhibits her characteristic restraint and control. I wanted to see what would happen if she were given more unfettered phrases to work with.
Periodically the bot produces something interesting, but the point is more to see what happens when these texts intersect.
